We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South West Africa, From the German Suedwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915

by Jackie Sibbles Drury

Gannett Theatre at Bates College
March 7th - 11th, 2019

Six young, passionate, talented theater artists come together to devise a play, three African American and three white. They all love what they do, and they love each other, but they’re trying to tackle an incredibly challenging topic, the genocide of the Herero tribe in Namibia. They struggle with how to best tell this story, given the only materials they have are letters from German soldiers, and slowly the work pivots from the history of genocide in Africa to modern race relations in America. Searing, touching, hilarious, and horrific. It's a gut punch of a play.
