Shakespeare in Love
by Lee Hall
Amphitheater at Ghostlight Theatre Camp in Oakland, ME.
Based on the romantic-comedy film of the same name, Shakespeare in Love follows a writer-block-addled William Shakespeare in the midst of crafting his newest comedy "Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter", and Viola de Lesseps a wealthy young woman who dreams of performing on the stage. Viola uses her acting skills and her feminine appearance to convince Shakespeare's company she's a talented young actor, just the "man" they need to play Ethel. But when William and Viola meet at court, their undeniable chemistry starts to threaten Viola's rouse and inspire what would eventually become Shakespeare's most enduring tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. A hilarious and wacky adaptation consisting of an entirely female/non-binary cast this production featured a composition of acapella songs spanning from the Elizabethan era to 90's pop.
